The company was established in 1868, but in 2021 it was acquired by Antiques Roadshow regular Lee Young, who has since brought many well known TV specialists on board with him to create a formidable team of valuers and auctioneers. Dore & Rees still resides in its original gothic building in central Frome, Somerset, but it uses state-of-the-art auction technology and has an internationally reaching marketplace.
It’s been recognised by the Antiques Trade Gazette as one of the UK’s fastest-growing regional auction houses, and is known for pairing seasoned expertise with a warmth and approachability often not associated with the auction industry.
Dore & Rees head of motoring is Nick Wells, who has long been involved with classic auction sales in the UK and Europe, and as far afield as South Africa. In 2021 he joined the expert panel of the ITV show The Car Years, taking two cars from a year in motoring history and pitching them against each other to pick a winner.
The motoring department also includes local car specialists Mike Reed and Leo Scott, and well known classic motorcycle specialist John Nash.
Another familiar name at Dore & Rees is car enthusiast Marc Allum, who has been a specialist on Antiques Roadshow for more than 20 years. He has appeared on numerous other television and radio shows over the years, writes regularly for mainstream magazines and is an author with several books to his name. He’s also an ambassador for the Association of Heritage Engineers.
More details of the sale at Wilton Legends 2026 will appear here closer to the event.
